|Interns at OSHEAN|
OSHEAN Intern Refelctions 2016
When I first started as an intern for OSHEAN, I did not know what to expect. My personal goal was to gain a better understanding of what I would like to do in my career path. I can confidently say the 6-month tenure at OSHEAN provided just that. Between the responsibilities given to me and the excellent mentorship from not only OSHEAN employees but board members as well, I can say I was able to effectively apply and expand upon my academic knowledge by gaining hands on experience. In fact, I did not feel treated as an intern but as an employee of their own, due to the mutual trust and confidence in each other’s decisions and actions backed by a relaxed but active work environment. This experience provided both tangible and intangible marketable skills that are signs of a successful internship, valued with friendships that will last a lifetime. I definitely have a great foundation leading myself into a solid future thanks to OSHEAN !
I have begun enjoying the internship and environment of osheAN so far. I like that here I am able to suggest things that I would like to see or get experience with. One example is being able to apply what I learned in school about Windows Server 2012 here and get hands of experience with it. Being able to shadow Abdiel for a day was great as I got to see what he does and what else I could possibly do in IT. I enjoyed doing that and if I had the chance I would like to do that again with someone else to see what they do. Getting to travel to different sites or sit in with meetings has also been great as I get to see what it is like to talk with customers and build relationships. I do not have anything that I dislike at the moment as everything has been a positive so far.
This first month at OSHEAN has been an incredible learning experience. In these first few weeks, I have learned about everything from web development to learning management systems. This internship has exposed me to a whole world of technology that I didn’t even know I was interested in until I learned about it through conversations with other employees. Although I don’t find myself doing a whole lot of intensive technical writing at the moment, I wouldn’t consider this a criticism. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of my work here at OSHEAN so far and I am eager to keep learning.
Let me start off by saying that my experience thus far at OSHEAN has exceeded all my expectations. I couldn’t ask for a friendlier more welcoming group then the current staff at OSHEAN. Everyone here is not only open and full of advice, but it is also obvious that each and every one of them is passionate about what they do. I find that this creates a stimulating environment in which it’s hard to not be excited about learning and working hard. I have spent the majority of my time thus far studying and working with the MediaSite software and have learned a huge amount not only about the software itself, but also about the general front end creation process in which user interfaces are built. As we begin to wrap up the work we have been doing with URI, I look forward to the next project. Ideally, I would be very interested in learning more about the cybersecurity aspect of the job especially in regards to how and why specific cybersecurity software can be effective. I look forward to the many learning experiences that I’m sure the rest of the summer has in store.
