History of OSHEAN
OSHEAN, Inc. (pronounced ocean), is a consortium of non-profit organizations dedicated to the creation of the best state-wide Internet communications network in the country, as measured by meeting our members' needs.
OSHEAN was founded in 1999 through a collaboration by RINET (Rhode Island Network for Educational Technology – K-12), the University of Rhode Island and Brown University. The consortium of non-profit organizations, now totaling 24, was originally formed to further network utilization and practice.
Initially several institutions of higher education in Rhode Island formed the OSHEAN membership, but in September of 2001, the consortium expanded into the health care community when Lifespan became OSHEAN's 11th member. OSHEAN further branched out to state government in October of 2005 when the Rhode Island Department of Administration, now the Division of Information Technology joined the consortium.
OSHEAN reached beyond the border's of Rhode Island for the first time in 2002 to welcome Wheaton College as its 13th member. Wheaton College's geographic location along with the value of OSHEAN membership made it a smart move for them.
Today, OSHEAN delivers an economical, ultra-broadband, Internet-based communication infrastructure with member services that enhance the productive use of this network. Our advanced technology solutions include ultra-broadband access to the Internet and Internet2, network security, disaster recovery, emergency preparedness, video conferencing and voiceover IP.
OSHEAN collaboratively delivers and maintains a secure communications infrastructure for Rhode Island's research, education, health care and public service communities. Our members include all of the universities in Rhode Island, some of Rhode Island State Government, and four Rhode Island health care organizations.
OSHEAN is committed to public involvement and uses the expertise of its staff and member institutions to help other organizations with less experience as well as strengthen the State of Rhode Island's networking capabilities for the benefit of all the residents of the State.
