OSHEAN Celebrates 15th Anniversary Delivering World-Class Services to Member Institutions.

Strength of membership community support critical to achieving major milestone.

NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI, August 19, 2014OSHEAN, a non-profit coalition of leading healthcare organizations, colleges and universities, K-12 schools, libraries, government agencies, and other community organizations dedicated to providing innovative carrier class optical transport, advanced IP-based networking and cloud solutions, announced today that is it celebrating its 15th anniversary. The original founding document for OSHEAN was signed on August 20, 1999, and outlines the goals for statewide telecommunications and network services.

OSHEAN operates the Beacon 2.0 state-of-the-art optical transport network, one of the most advanced optical fiber networks in the country. As one of its crowning achievements over the course of its existence, the Beacon 2.0 network is emblematic of the innovative services OSHEAN provides for its member institutions. At its inception, OSHEAN was tasked with achieving the following:

  • Improve the state’s information infrastructure by creating an aggregation point where networks in use today can share resources and gain access to high performance networks;
  • Provide greater access to a wide range of information services in the areas of health care, education, training, government and economic development;
  • Reduce the cost of government services by utilizing advanced telecommunication and information technologies to increase productivity and efficiency of operations.

Today, OSHEAN has successfully implemented 450+ fiber miles and enabled more than 125 Community Anchor Institutions to achieve groundbreaking research, improved healthcare services, innovative classroom instruction and critical life-safety upgrades. In addition, OSHEAN’s best-in-class technology solutions support the integration of new resources that prepare institutions including libraries and other non-profits to continue serving their communities for the next generation and beyond.
