NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI, August 19, 2014– OSHEAN, a non-profit coalition of leading healthcare organizations, colleges and universities, K-12 schools, libraries, government agencies, and other community organizations dedicated to providing innovative carrier class optical transport, advanced IP-based networking and cloud solutions, announced today that is it celebrating its 15th anniversary. The original founding document for OSHEAN was signed on August 20, 1999, and outlines the goals for statewide telecommunications and network services.
OSHEAN operates the Beacon 2.0 state-of-the-art optical transport network, one of the most advanced optical fiber networks in the country. As one of its crowning achievements over the course of its existence, the Beacon 2.0 network is emblematic of the innovative services OSHEAN provides for its member institutions. At its inception, OSHEAN was tasked with achieving the following:
Today, OSHEAN has successfully implemented 450+ fiber miles and enabled more than 125 Community Anchor Institutions to achieve groundbreaking research, improved healthcare services, innovative classroom instruction and critical life-safety upgrades. In addition, OSHEAN’s best-in-class technology solutions support the integration of new resources that prepare institutions including libraries and other non-profits to continue serving their communities for the next generation and beyond.
