|Broadband Stimulus Grant Funding Update|
In August 2009, OSHEAN submitted a grant to seek funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act's (ARRA), Broadband Technology Opportunity Program (BTOP) to expand its existing dedicated optical network. An investment of $31.5 million to expand our existing next-generation broadband utilizing dedicated fiber optic networks would provide the increased capacity to twenty-two research and education-focused organizations in Rhode Island.
Recently, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announced that they have received 2,200 applications seeking $28 billion in funds (the entire program has only $4B available). These numbers cover both the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) and the rurally focused Broadband Initiatives Program (BIP) funds.
In addition, the NTIA has notified state liaisons that they will be sending the applications back to each state for their assessment and approval, much earlier in the review process than originally planned, in an effort to manage the large number of applications. Several applicant proposals from Rhode Island were submitted. Each application will be reviewed by the Broadband Stimulus Review Committee.
OSHEAN has received a great deal of support from its members and Board of Directors alike. In the process we have attained 16 letters of support, representing 16 individual member institutions, letter of endorsement from 8 of our Board of Directors, as well as strong support from our networking friends across the country.
