Please join The International Charter School (ICS) on Monday, December 8 at 6:00 pm, as they host a reception to celebrate the opening of an exhibit of photographs and creative writing by third graders in the Spanish-English dual language strand—Documenting Cultural Communities: A Digital Photography Project.

This year, new to the project, is the integration of technology.  Students’ still photographs will be technology enhanced to play a video when a viewer scans an iPad over the image using an application called Aurasma. Viewers will be able see videos of students in addition to digitally produced text to accompany their images.

This exhibit marks the culmination of a 10-week session taught by Providence photographer, Mary Beth Meehan, to third grade students as they explored the cultural, geographical, and political aspects of own communities with their classroom teacher.  Every student was loaned a camera each Friday used to document that week’s social studies lesson. Photos were displayed at the beginning of the next week and students wrote, either in English or Spanish, to describe what it was about their photograph that “caught their eye”. Students developed an understanding of the still photograph as an art form, along with its role in both visual communication and documentation. This exhibition is the first of three exhibitions which will be held this school year.
