OSHEAN’s Beacon 2.0 Network Information

One of the most advanced optical networks in the country, the Beacon 2.0 network provides OSHEAN members with a highly manageable, highly redundant, standards-based platform for a true service provider grade network.

In 2010, OSHEAN secured over $32 million to build a 450+ mile fiber optic backbone to connect many of the region’s Community Anchor Institutions. OSHEAN’s successful Broadband Technologies Opportunities Program (BTOP) grant project, now known as Beacon 2.0, was completed in August 2013 and is connected to over 125 CAI facilities including many state institutions including URI, RIC and the State Data Center, 39 school districts, 16 library facilities and the state’s three largest hospital consortia with direct fiber into a highly resilient mesh backbone.

OSHEAN’s Beacon 2.0 state-of-the-art optical transport network consists of 450+ miles of fiber optics. The Beacon 2.0 Network is built on Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) and the Cisco Carrier Packet Transport (CPT) platform.

OSHEAN’s Beacon 2.0 network allows circuits to be built intra and inter-organization to satisfy application requirements. Circuits can be constructed in a number of configurations including point-to-point, point-to-multipoint (partial mesh), and multipoint-to-multipoint (mesh).

The power of Beacon 2.0 enables OSHEAN to offer cutting-edge transport services to Higher Education Institutions, State and Local Government, Healthcare Organizations, K-12 Schools, Libraries, Community Organizations and others at greater speeds and lower cost than other providers. OSHEAN has recently extended the Beacon 2.0 network to provide a direct, on-net connection to one of the world’s leading cloud service providers to support future advanced virtual compute, storage and desktop as a service offerings.

Additional Information

Leased Circuits

OSHEAN offers leased data, voice, and hybrid circuits from selected carriers, which may be used to connect to the OSHEAN network, or between Member sites. OSHEAN provides centralized management of circuits, working directly with the carriers to simplify the ordering, billing, and management process for the member.

Lateral Construction

For new members and for additional sites within existing member environments, OSHEAN can provide a turnkey construction program to build lateral circuits to the Beacon 2.0 backbone.  OSHEAN has a number of partners who can plan, construct, install and turn up new fiber loops to member facilities.  Pricing and time frames will vary with distance and other construction considerations.  OSHEAN also has alternatives to land line fiber such as packet radio which can potentially overcome distance or construction impediments.

CCRI & Beacon 2.0

CCRI leveraged the Beacon 2.0 Network in new and exciting ways.

As the largest community college in New England, more than 60,000 graduates call the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) their alma mater. By providing open access to higher education to recent high school graduates and adult learners, CCRI gives students the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for intellectual, professional and personal growth through an array of academic, career and lifelong learning programs offered as part of more than 80 degree and certificate programs.
