OSHEANs Video Commons 2.0 is specifically tailored for performance and resiliency and is the network layer that bridges the Cloud Video Platform environments to a member’s location(s). Unlike other cloud service providers that exclusively use the commodity Internet to access cloud services, OSHEANs Virtual Private Video Cloud provides members with a unique experience.

At the center of the Cloud Video Platform is OSHEANs Beacon 2.0 network. The Beacon2 network is a state-of-the-art optical network built on Cisco’s 15454 Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) systems and Carrier Packet Transport (CPT) platform. The Beacon 2.0 network is a highly resilient multi-layer environment best described as a VPLS meshed architecture with multiple and diverse BGP routes, to and from, core nodes.

Isolated within OSHEANs AP1 core node is the Mediasite cloud environment. This segment of the Cloud Video Platform environment provides the media management and on-demand web-casting service. Powered by Cisco’s Unified Computing Service (UCS) and configured with 16 virtual machines running Mediasite’s Enterprise Video Platform software, enables OSHEAN to offer cutting-edge media management services to Members without compromise. Network traffic from the UCS environment, over the Beacon 2.0, to member location(s) is expedited using redundant Barracuda A10 load balancers. These network load balancers provide the needed SSL security offload and application delivery infrastructure to support “always-on” scalable business requirement.

Beacon 2.0 is internetworked with Internet2 via a collaborative relationship with the Northeast Regional Education Network (NEREN). NEREN operates the fiber ring that connects important North East data centers in Hartford, Springfield, Worcester, Cambridge and Providence. Through NEREN, OSHEAN connects with the Northern Crossroads (NoX) GigaPop. The NoX is operated by MIT, BU and Harvard and provides regional connectivity to important peering points such as Internet 2. It is through this peering point that OSHEAN is able to extend ID-Solutions Vidyo cloud service (AKA Net+ Flame) to members. Built by and for the research and education community, the Internet2 Network offers 8.8 Terabits of capacity and 100 gigabit Ethernet technology on its entire footprint.

Residing on the Internet2 backbone is the Flame NET+ Vidyo service. This hybrid Vidyo cloud architecture provides the most efficient traffic optimization on the market with geographically separated, enterprise-grade backup data centers across the US. Each data center provides 99.99% network uptime along with on-site security and 24x7x365 monitoring. On the OSHEAN backbone resides a fully redundant Vidyo replay archive cluster that stores MP4 recordings of member’s web conferences or lecture captures sessions. Both the Beacon 2.0 and Internet2 backbones each have redundant Internet pathways to communicate with “off-net” endpoints. All data is AES encrypted with SSL from client to the NET+ Flame server to ensure a secure suite of visual communication service. Offering uninhibited performance on a deeply programmable platform, the combination of OSHEANs Beacon 2.0 and Internet2 Network are properly designed to support bi-direction visual communication applications – such as the NET+ Flame service power by Vidyo.
